Diversity among humans is quite huge. The whole world is filled with people that come from different regions, traditions, cultures and each one of us has a different perspective towards life. While the word diversity may sound intriguing and interesting, there is one important fact we all must know where it emerged. Diversity may not seem important to people, to be discussed but when the three letters "BIO" are placed before them, this word changes everything. What's the word? Biodiversity, you got that right. Let's jump into the definition of this aspect, as per dictionary and google it states the variety of plant and animal life in the world or in a particular habitat which is a high-level aspect considered to be important and desirable. So, what do you think is it important? My insight into biodiversity is completely different from just the definition. Biodiversity is not just a word but a complete set consisting of everything, including us. It's not just animals and birds but life and its importance. One thing we all learned in school is for nature to function properly, biodiversity is important. To elaborate more on how we become a part of biodiversity since we are humans and not plants and animals, I have a valid argument that most of you might be aware of. Well, we know the existence of man was a process of evolution. We are referred to as great apes. About 13.5 billion years ago, matter, energy, time, and space were born with what we call The Big Bang. Where everyone has their interpretation of the concept of life and man, about 2.5 million years ago an earlier genus of apes called Australopithecus is believed to be the start of Human evolution. So finally, we are animals and more precisely apes. I bet even Australopithecus would have never imagined that someday his genus would transform hugely making a difference and inventing stuff. Starting from science and technology to modern computers we are growing at every stage. Be it inventing new elements to destroying nature, we prove ourselves doing the best job. We are so busy in the huge market of life that we don't even think of how much we exploited nature and its elements.
"Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed's". Everything that was created was given to every creature in equal proportions. We are the ones who decide when to use what and how to use the resource. So, are we doing the job of using our resources wisely? If the answer was a yes, you may want to rethink it after you finish reading. Our resources were created in such a way that we all get sufficient to lead a life peacefully. Everything in nature is made of five basic elements, air, water, earth, fire, and sky and they are in a quantity beyond our imagination but the truth now is we made them reach our imagination. Even the five basic elements that were supposed to be given to every individual, are now exploited. These elements were created in such a way that we never will fall short of them but still, we are in a scenario called air and water pollution. We Homo sapiens are so smart that we never leave anything on Earth in isolation. We might even end up starting fire, space, and even Earth pollution. There are places in the world, that lack proper pure oxygen to breathe, while other places people are waiting to quench their thirst but have no access to clean water, while somewhere people die due to landslides, floods, blasts and we are so brutal that we not just exploited ourselves and nature but even animals who were not to be the prey of our selfishness. Animals and birds die with the wildfires that emerge. Animals are prey to our actions and they are innocent little creatures who have done nothing but lead their lives in peace. The truth is everything that is happening is the result of our actions. Not to blame the government or a group of industrialists but the blame is to be shared by the entire human society. Every individual is contributing to this exploitation of nature, it's just the number of percentages that differ. Some might contribute up to 20-30% while some 2-3% to this disaster and destruction of nature. All across the world numerous people from different territories work to preserve nature and conserve it. A lot of people focus on crucial topics like global warming and climatic changes. Still, how many of us try to act maturely to conserve our environment? We watch nature conservation shows, participate in campaigns, read blogs related to such issues, discuss to protest, and take part in it. We watch movies showing our future or making us realize the present, we discuss it for a day, appreciate the director, story, cast, and then sleep like we always do. So, let's look back and think, is that the most accurate righteous act? I barely think so. We end up blaming huge industries and politicians but the truth is that even a single Homo sapien can create an impact. Let me tell you a little story. A short and simple story of a little girl in fifth grade. One day her science teacher taught her the importance of water and how to save it. The tips to conserve water were huge. One tip caught her eye and it was to turn off the tap water while brushing her teeth. Though she secured an A+ in her assignment to write about saving water hacks, she never actually thought of implementing them, until one day her mom noticed her wasting water while brushing. It took her six months to realize her mistake. When her mother lectured her about the importance of water and ways to save it, she understood her mistake and did the least she could. Later on, she sat and calculated the amount of water she wasted, with the help of her tiny brain and complicated math. Assuming the principle she learned in school about brushing her teeth twice for two minutes and with her assumption that the tap water flows at the rate of 2 litres/minute, the total amount of water wasted per day came out to be 8 litres. To further complicate her calculations, she figured out the wastage for six months which was a hard calculation for a little girl but still found the answer to be 1464 litres of water exploitation. This baffled the little girl and she started to save the amount of water she has been wasting in her entire life. Thus, she never became famous but still, she was happy for the little act she performed in the mission to save water and she lived happily thereafter.
So, how’s the little story? The number 1464 litres is not much, right? If you said yes, I am sorry you are wrong and mistaken. Millions of people across the globe die due to the insufficiency of clean water. Saving that 1464 litres might, no definitely help someone in the future to quench someone’s thirst. Every deed we do creates an impact. We all have learnt about rooftop rainwater harvesting. Many of us have even created working models on it for earning extra points and winning competitions but how many of us have implemented it. The answer is very few. Even after we grow up, we barely think about creating a self-sustained house for living. Instead of awarding marks for students to build models of rooftop rainwater harvesting, students must be motivated to build one working system in their house or convince their parents to implement one. Think about the usage of vehicles, for every small trip we prefer riding a car. Instead, we could start walking and reduce pollutants in the air. This way we can save the biodiversity that also includes us. Not just these there are enormous numbers of acts we all could perform every day that we are aware of to save nature. Doing our bit is very important. Blaming a group is not appropriate until we have done our bit and are satisfied with it.
In a world where people die due to lack of clean air to breathe everything counts. Even switching off the running taps to throwing garbage in the trash and not on the road. If you already do such small little acts, you are doing your bit and that is to be appreciated. Still, if you think you can do more you should go for it. People might never appreciate you but the fact is Mother Nature will definitely and that's the best appreciation. You might not witness it but you will understand it further in your journey called life. We invented words like Earthquake, pollution, and disaster but very soon we might have a word invented by nature called manquake that could destroy us completely. Times, when disasters were natural, are extinct, most of the disasters that happen today are because of humans. We have to be prepared to face them or try to stop them by conserving our surroundings and nature. The second option should be preferred since the first one is dangerous and kills creatures. Nature's exploitation does not just affect your life but also your living. Pandemic is the best example to prove this point, people lost their jobs and faced a food crisis. Stopping nature's wrath to happen again is better than facing it. Every act counts and creates an impact. Though not appreciated or recognized by the society we are still performing our duty and fall in the gratitude of Mother Nature. Let's not exploit the surroundings for our greed and consume the resources only for our needs. Let’s go #startyourbit; missionsaveworld or #nonewpollutions; missiongreengreatEarth. Let's not just post them and implement these hashtags by performing our bit. The solutions provided here might not cover complicated science but this basic bit can actually help save biodiversity beyond our imagination and thus creates a change in the mission to save nature. So, let's try to give it a go and join everyone else who is working to save Earth and nature.
PS: A small note to my readers, change of plans in editions from now on. I will now post editions twice a month from the earlier schedule of every Friday. You will now receive my editions on the first and third Friday of every month! If you are wondering why it’s because your author is currently facing difficulty juggling between her tasks and work! It happens sometimes in life and believe me the best thing is to just take a break and relax! ;)
Best Regards,
Ganga
